Demonstration School for the Deaf in Akuapem Mampong gets new b’ball court

MASAI Ujiri’s Giants of Africa (GOA), a non-profit organisation that uses basketball to empower African youth, has handed over a newly constructed basketball court to the Demonstration School for the Deaf (DEMODEAF) in Akuapem Mampong of the Eastern Region.
The project, executed in partnership with Sport Court and the Ghana Basketball Federation (GBF), is to introduce the game of basketball to students of the facility to grow the game across the country.
Handing over the facility to the school authority, a Senior Coach at GOA and FIBA Instructor, Joe Touomou, said the mission and vision of DEMODEAF aligns with that of GOA, hence the decision to support.
Coach Touomou described the visit as a deeply emotional and fulfilling experience, highlighting the transformative power of basketball.
The Director of Partnerships and Community Relations at Sport Court, Lauren Gillian, described the project as “more than just building a playing surface.”
The Headmaster of DEMODEAF, Mr Ametewee Setumtu Dzodzi, expressed appreciation to GOA, Sport Court, and the GBF for the life-changing initiative, which he believes will offer a new layer of hope to the inmates.
He assured the partners of the school’s commitment to maintaining the facility and expressed hope for continued collaboration.
Coach Touomou and assistant Geraldine Robert held a mentorship session for about 50 selected inmates, who were introduced to basic basketball rules and shared personal experiences, encouraging them to dream big and embrace the opportunities the sport can offer.
The team donated 20 basketballs to support ongoing training and development projects at the facility.
