Denmark, UNDP sign pact for phase II of Atlantic Corridor Project

The Kingdom of Denmark has signed a pact agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Ghana, for the implementation of phase II of the Atlantic Corridor Project to support communities in Ghana to build resilience and prevent the spread of violent extremism in the country.

The agreement was signed by the Ambassador of Denmark to Ghana, Mr Jacob Linulf, and the UNDP Residential Representative in Ghana, Mr Niloy Banerjee, in Accra yesterday.

The objectives of phase II of the project are to expand nature-based solutions along the country’s coastlines, enhance biodiversity, strengthen climate resilience in vulnerable communities, promote sustainable livelihoods, improve coastal infrastructure, and foster inclusive development through strategic partnerships and community engagement.

It is being implemented in Ghana, alongside four other African countries, namely Burkina Faso, Togo, Benin, and Cote D’Ivoire.

Mr Banerjee, in a brief remark before the signing of the agreement, expressed gratitude to the Denmark government for supporting the project and other initiatives of the UNDP in Ghana and other countries across the globe.

According to him, Denmark had been one of the few countries that had maintained a high level of development cooperation and allocated 0.7 per cent of its national income to the UNDP for various developmental projects.

He, therefore, pledged the commitment of the UNDP to sustain its cooperation with Denmark to enhance various developmental projects and to build the resilience of communities in the country.

For his part, Mr Linulf said that Denmark remained committed to supporting the government in the implementation of developmental initiatives that helped improve the livelihood of communities, especially those in the coastal areas, and prevent the spread of violent extremism.

“We will continue to support the government in its effort of providing the citizenry with a stable and peaceful development and a conducive environment. We are also focused on regional development as we know that peace and development is something that is not unique to one country,” Mr Banerjee noted.

He was optimistic that the expertise of the UNDP in the implementation of the project would help prevent the rise of violent extremism in the countries it was being implemented and promote peace and stability in the West African sub-region.
