ECG cautions public against mobile money fraudsters
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has cautioned the public to beware of fraudsters demanding mobile money payments in exchange for services such as meter installation, replacement and debt cancellation.
The Ashanti West Regional General Manager of ECG, Mr George Amoah, said the company does not operate any mobile money account and urged customers to disregard such demands.
“They contact customers via social media or phone calls and impersonate ECG officials, demanding money for meters and installations,” he explained.
He stressed that all legitimate transactions are done through ECG’s cashless system using the ECG PowerApp or shortcode *226#, which allows customers to pay without mobile money charges.
Mr Amoah expressed concern over the growing incidence of fraud, citing recent cases where victims lost sums ranging from GH¢900 to GH¢2,000 to fraudsters.
He disclosed that the company was working with security agencies to trace and prosecute the culprits. Districts such as Adum, Kokoben, Suame, Danyame, Abuakwa and Ahinsan have all recorded such incidents, with scammers using numbers including 0531807230, 0508790801, 0543803302 and 0532752541.
Clarifying the proper process, he elaborated that customers must engage Energy Commission-certified electricians to complete wiring before submitting forms to the ECG office.
A registration fee of GH¢100 is paid at the office, after which an estimator inspects the premises and issues a quotation.
He advised the public to visit ECG offices for clarification and avoid dealing with middlemen.
