The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has retrieved GH¢1 million out of GH¢ 2,854,247 owed by customers in the Bogoso Municipality of the Western Region.
This followed an exercise embarked upon by the Revenue Mobilisation Taskforce of the ECG.
The ECG communications officer in Western Region, Benjamin Quarcoo, told the Ghanaian Times yesterday that the Bogoso Community Mine paid GH¢100,000, but electricity supply to the place was disconnected because it still owed about GH¢400,000.
He said Long Shine company paid GH¢260,000, Big Stone paid, GH¢ 290,000, with about GH¢600,000, remaining outstanding.
Mr Quarcoo said the total debt retrieved by the ECG Task Force so far amounted to GH¢ 4 million.
Earlier, the team recovered at least GH¢ 3 million out of a debt of GH¢8million owed by customers in the Sekondi -Takoradi Metropolis.
He said that the next operation of the taskforce was scheduled for Sefwi Wiawso in the Western North Region.
Mr Quarcoo cautioned customers to pay their electricity bill and should not wait for the task force to chase them before making payment.
He said the team “will move to customers to recover debts and also check the integrity of their service meters to determine whether they are paying for the right amount of energy used.”
He explained that “customers would either be required to pay on the spot, agree on a debt schedule for repayment or have their electricity supply disconnected.”
The Western Regional Commercial Manager of ECG, Mr Emmanuel Sam, said that, the company was in dire financial straits and would recover every debt owed it.
The Western Region Asset Protection Manager of ECG, John Quayson, reiterated that persons who give credible information leading to the arrest of customers using electricity illegally, would earn 30 percent of monies recovered.
