The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has begun the nationwide deployment of Franchise Officers across all its district operational areas as part of measures to enhance operational efficiency and improve service delivery.
The deployment, which took effect on February 1 this year, will enable Franchise Officers to support ECG’s field operations by undertaking tasks such as reading postpaid meters, checking the integrity of prepaid meters, distributing and printing bills on-site using handheld devices.
The officers will also assist customers to make payments through approved digital platforms, including the ECG Power App and short code *226#, with the company stressing that cash payments are strictly prohibited.
Additionally, Franchise Officers will be responsible for disconnecting customers whose accounts are in arrears and identifying and reporting illegal electricity-related activities for appropriate action.
Speaking in an interview with The Ghanaian Times in Accra on Friday, the General Manager for External Relations at ECG, Dr Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, said the initiative forms part of the company’s broader strategy to bring services closer to customers while improving accountability and revenue assurance.
“The Franchise Officer initiative is designed to enhance customer convenience, improve billing accuracy, and strengthen ECG’s engagement at the community level. By decentralising these services, we are ensuring that customers receive timely and efficient support right at their doorsteps,” Dr Ayiku explained.
He further emphasised the importance of customer safety and transparency, urging the public to verify the identity of Franchise Officers before engaging with them.
“All Franchise Officers will carry official ECG identification cards and signed authorisation letters from their respective districts. Customers are encouraged to request these documents as proof of authenticity,” he added.
Dr Ayiku noted that the initiative would also help curb electricity theft and other illegal practices, contributing to improved service sustainability and system reliability.
He advised customers seeking further information to contact the ECG Call Centre on 0302611611 or engage the company through its official social media platforms on Facebook, X, Instagram and TikTok via @ECGghOfficial.
The company said the franchise deployment underscores its commitment to delivering efficient, transparent and customer-focused electricity services nationwide.
