Education must promote justice, human development — Jesuit Superior General

THE Superior General of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), Very Rev. Father Arturo Marcelino Sosa Abascal, has called for an education system that promotes justice and human development to help build a better Ghana and world.

He said education should equip students with the values and skills needed to contribute meaningfully to society, promote peaceful coexistence and ensure that everyone had the opportunity to live with dignity and hope.

Father Sosa made the call during an engagement with students and staff of St. Ignatius School in Accra on Tuesday, as part of his four-day official visit to Ghana.

He said education should focus not only on the personal development of students but also on preparing them to become responsible members of their communities.

He added that the Jesuit educational tradition sought to prepare students not merely for professional success but also to serve humanity and contribute to building a more just society.

Father Sosa also encouraged the students to apply the knowledge and values they acquired at school to national development and help create a society in which justice was part of everyday life.

He said Ghana needed people committed to building a just and reconciled society in which everyone had a place and could live with hope.

The Superior General expressed satisfaction with the school’s commitment to the four Cs of Jesuit education — competence, conscience, compassion and commitment — which seek to develop students into capable, responsible and service-oriented individuals.

The visit was also intended to strengthen the Jesuits’ mission and highlight their more than five decades of service to Ghana.

The Jesuit educational tradition emphasises academic excellence, character formation, faith, discipline, leadership and social responsibility.

The Parish Priest of St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Church, Father Kofi Agyapong, stated that the visit reinforced the unity among Jesuits across countries and institutions, despite differences in their assignments and locations.

He said their shared commitment to justice, peace, faith and Ignatian spirituality remained central to the Society of Jesus.

According to him, the visit strengthened the school’s sense of belonging to the wider international Jesuit community and encouraged it to continue pursuing its educational mission.

Father Agyapong said the approach sought to develop students’ competence, shape their consciences, nurture compassion and encourage commitment to God and country.
