Eleven Wonders grab season’s second win
BOTTOM club, Eleven Wonders, recorded their second win of the 18-week Ghana Premier League competition with a 2-0 victory over Basake Holy Stars on Friday at the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon.
Two second-half strikes from Rauf Munah in a space of four minutes were all the “Sure Wonders” side needed to send the visitors back to base without a point.
Playing to a near-empty capacity stadium, both sides created few chances in the first half but failed to convert, with Basake Holy Stars, who dominated possession, the worse culprits.
Back from the break, Wonders pushed men forward in search of the opener, and three minutes after the break, they found it through Munah, who exchanged passes with Emmanuel Boateng before hitting a low shot past goalkeeper Dubi Kassi Tayi in post for Holy Stars.
The goal brought some energy into their play, and four minutes after the opener, winger Desmond Acheampong’s cross from the left was miskicked by defender Moses Author to the path of Munah to slot home for the second goal.
Having endured a torrid season, where they lost some games from winning positions, the handful of club faithful’s sat on tenterhooks for the remainder of the game as the visitors threatened the goal area of the host in search of a goal.
Sylvester Simba, Francis Asante and Prince Tweneboah all came close to reducing the deficit, but goalkeeper Hardy Obenfo Adjei proved equal to the task while defenders Kenneth Boakye Owusu and Hakem Milla stood tall in aerial challenges.
The victory improves Wonders’ record in the league to two wins, three draws and 13 defeats in 18 games, which sees them languish at the bottom of the log with nine points.
They will next trek to the Kpando Stadium to play as guests of Heart of Lions, while Holy Stars face Bechem United at the Ampain AAK II Sports Arena.
