President Mahama renews vows to Ghanaians …promises ethical leadership at all levels

President John Dramani Mahama has renewed his vows to Ghanaians with a new pledge to deliver ethical leadership at all levels of governance.

At a non-denominational thanksgiving service at the Presidency in Accra yesterday to mark his one year in office, President Mahama assured the citizenry of his resolve to deepen the reforms started so far that have turned the economy around.

“We commit to ethical leadership, service over self, governance anchored in integrity, competence and compassion.

“We commit to listening to the voices of the vulnerable, our youth and those who feel excluded, and to the unity of our nation, knowing that Ghana’s strength has always come from our ability to rise above division and work together for the common good,” he assured.

According to President Mahama, over the past one year, difficult decisions have been taken to lay the foundation that may not yet be visible but necessary for the sustainable progress of the country.

The administration, he emphasised, had prioritised economic stabilisation, institutional reforms, social protection and the restoration of confidence both locally and internationally.

However, he acknowledged that the years ahead would demand even more and test citizens’ resolve, patience, and discipline because “the work we have begun is far from finish”.

“It also offers us the opportunity to deepen the reforms we’ve started, to accelerate our growth, and ensure that development and progress touches every part of our country.

“Let us move forward with humility, lead with empathy, and govern with courage. Let’s never forget that leadership is stewardship, temporary and fleeting.

“Authority is a fleeting trust held on behalf of the people,” he admonished.

President Mahama expressed his appreciation on behalf of the government to the Ghanaian people for their trust, patience, partnerships and shared sacrifice.

In his homily from 1 Samuel 7:12-16, titled impact of gratitude on leadership success and national development, Dr Stephen Wengam, the General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Ghana, said a thanksgiving to God was appropriate.

“In as much as we are counting many successes chalked by this administration, we also remember the [helicopter crash] tragedy that befell this country leading to the perishing of some of the gallant men of this country.

“We are here to Thank God for the good, the bad and ugly,” he stated.

Giving his personal testimony, Dr Wengam indicated that he has on several real occasions received calls from his friends heaping praises on President Mahama and his management of the economy, stating that “transformation calls for thanksgiving”.
