Fake plastic surgeon in court
Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday granted GH₵300,000.00 bail to Dr Malu Tongwe Joseph, who claims to be a plastic surgeon, for operating illegally in the country.
He pleaded not guilty to two counts of practicing medicine without registration, and receiving payment for the practice of medicine without registration.
As part of the bail conditions, the court presided by Emmanuel Essandoh asked the accused to produce three sureties in order to execute the bond.
The facts are that, the accused arrived in Ghana and was lodging in a hotel in Accra, and had various sessions of consultations with prospective clients at a fee of $100.00 or its cedi equivalent.
Dr Tongwe Joseph was also said to have booked appointments with interested persons, for surgeries to be performed in Nigeria.
In a video circulating on social media, the alleged quack doctor was seen announcing his arrival in Ghana, and calling on the public to patronise his services, as he would be around from October 30 to November 2.
The attention of the Medical and Dental Council (MDC) was drawn to the illegal dealings of the accused, and the La district police was contacted to help arrest him.
Officials of the MDC and policemen rushed to the hotel where he (Dr Malu) was attending to clients and arrested him.
Meanwhile, the Medical and Dental Council of Ghana was awaiting a response from the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council to ascertain whether accused is a registered member.
The case has been adjourned to November 13, 2019.
