The family of the late Ghanaian undergraduate student, Nana Agyei Ahyia, who died under unclear circumstances in Latvia, has petitioned the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to intervene further to ensure a thorough investigation into his death.
The petition, signed by Ms Sarah Nyenejay Nimely on behalf of the Nimely and William Oduro Ahyia families, and copied to The Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday, raised concerns about lapses in the Latvian police investigations.
These, according to the family, include the premature conclusion of suicide, absence of forensic evidence, and failure to interrogate key suspects.
While expressing gratitude to the Ministry and the Ghana Embassy in Berlin for their initial support, the families said the Latvian police hastily concluded that Nana Agyei committed suicide without producing substantive evidence.
“We were not provided with any photo evidence, forensic reports, or investigative documentation,” the petition indicated, adding that there was no proof that CCTV footage from the scene was reviewed.
The families also questioned inconsistencies between the police’s account and the condition of the deceased’s body.
“The mortuary reported the deceased was fully clothed, including socks, with a scratch on his forehead but no broken bones—details inconsistent with a person alleged to have fallen from a sixth-floor window,” the statement noted.
They further cited a voice message Nana Agyei sent before his death, in which he revealed that he had been offered a drink by two Latvian acquaintances, after which he collapsed and was hospitalised. Medical records confirmed poisoning, yet suspects named by the deceased were released.
The families are, therefore, calling on the Ministry to use diplomatic channels to urge Latvian authorities to reopen the case for a comprehensive and impartial investigation.
