Farmers, fishers honoured at district level

 This year’s Farmers’ Day was marked across the districts to honour farm­ers, fishers at the local levels for their enormous contributions to the development of agriculture in the country.

For their contributions in promoting food security of the country, the winners apart from certificates, were presented with prizes such as, freezers, tricycles, Polytanks, cutlasses, agro-chem­icals, Wellington boots, wax prints and knapsack sprayers.

From the Adentan Municipality in the Greater Accra Region, Lawrence Vomafa-Akpalu reports that, a 52-year-old farmer, Godwin Tsikata, was adjudged the overall best Municipal Farmer with eight other winners.

At Asutsuare in the Shai Osuduku District, the assemblyman of Asutsuare, Jonathan Kene Kwab­la was adjudged the overall best District Farmer, alongside 10 other winners.

The Ayawaso West Municipal had Baba Mo­hammed Akanyi as the overall best farmer.

In the Ayawaso Central Municipality, 45-year-old farmer, Juliana Koranteng was adjudged the overall best Municipal Female Farmer along with other five winners.

From the Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly (AEMA), Agnes Owusu reports that a 23-year-old farmer, Mr Osman Gariba, emerged the overall Municipal Best Farmer with three other winners.

From the Krowor Municipal Assembly (Kro­MA), CYNTHIA ASAMPANA reports that Inusah Issifu was awarded the overall best farmer with six other winners.

In the New Juaben South Municipality in the Eastern Region, AMA TEKYIWAA AMPADU AGYEMAN, reports that 31-year-old Joshua Nakoja was named best farmer with two other winners.

From the Akatsi District in the Volta Region, SAMUEL AGBEWODE reports that 38-year-old man, Mr Samuel Gomado from Ave-Dzadzefe in the Akatsi-District of the Volta Region was adjudged the best district farmer.

From the Ahanta West Municipality in the West­ern Region, CLEMENT ADZEI BOYE reports that Felix Sika Mensah, a 62-year-old was adjudged the overall best farmer with other seven winners.

From the La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assem­bly, VICTOR BUXTON reports that a 51-year-old exotic vegetable farmer, Dawuda Omar Moro, was adjudged the overall best farmer with other winners.

The farmers and fishers were praised for their commitment and encouraged to adopt climate-re­silient agricultural practices which had helped in enhancing the country’s food security and com­plemented the government’s efforts in building a climate resilient economy.

The farmers were urged to adopt crop di­versification, and promote efficient water use, sustainable land management practices and also encouraging the use of climate-smart technologies as a means of safeguarding the environment that sustains us.

The MCEs urged players in the agriculture in­dustry to explore ways to protect their profession from the escalating risks posed by climate change, market accessibility and others while creating sustainable food system.

The Municipal Chief Executives who spoke at the programme commended farmers for their hard work over the years, which led to the provi­sion of adequate food for the country and ensured food security.

They were also urged to adopt technological practices that ensured sustainability, while reducing environmental impacts in order to protect the land, enhance biodiversity and conserve water resources.

The MCEs pledged government’s commitment to initiate policies to promote agriculture and honour farmers for their hard work.
