Faulty street lights cause of pedestrian knockdowns in Adenta, Sakumono, others – Residents
Faulty street lights in some parts of Adenta, Sakumono and Okponglo are contributing to the recent increase in pedestrian knockdowns and robbery in the communities.
The residents have, therefore, appealed to the various municipal authorities to salvage the situation.
They suggested that there should be constant monitoring and replacement of faulty bulbs as this would ensure that the areas were properly lit at night.
In separate interviews with some residents, they opined that although faulty street lights were the major cause for the knockdowns and robberies, it was usually not safe to walk and drive at night.
A resident, Mrs Gladys, at Okponglo said accidents recorded lately were very sad, hence, there was the need for people to be very vigilant and alert when crossing the roads.
“Sometimes when we are crossing the road, we turn to check several times if there were vehicles coming because some vehicles used the outer lanes with speed which frightens us”.
An Administrative Officer, Josephine Tettey, at Adenta shared her experience of an attack by armed robbers who shot at her in an attempt to snatch her bag and phone.
“Because there are no street lights, it’s very disturbing and risky when coming from town, a month ago I was attacked by robbers and got shot after they took all my belongings.”
Mr David Asong, a taxi driver at Sakumono, said he had witnessed many terrifying accidents along roads that had no street lights
“I have witnessed too many accidents for the past months; most of my friends have lost their lives due to the absence of streetlights and road crashes by drivers on top”.
“We are pleading with authorities to fix all damaged street lights on the roads in order to save lives.”
The Ghanaian Times toured some of the streets in the said communities during the weekend and it was noted that a number of street lights were faulty and other streets did not have lights at all.
A week ago, two persons were reportedly injured in a multiple-vehicle accident at Okponglo on the Legon-Madina road.
Eye witnesses claimed it was as a result of darkness on the road due to lack of streetlights.
