The Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has strongly criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) for insensitive attempt to politicise the recent clashes in Obuasi, in the Ashanti Region, which claimed nine lives.
He condemned the NPP for prioritising political point-scoring over showing compassion to the bereaved families.
Dr Forson, speaking at a press briefing outside Parliament on Tuesday, urged all stakeholders to focus on finding solutions to prevent similar tragedies.
“The NPP Minority is dabbling in cheap politics by creating a misleading impression that the unfortunate demise of the miners was caused by political violence. This is not the time for desperate political point-scoring but for unity and support for the affected families,” he stated.
The Finance Minister expressed concern over the NPP’s narrative, which he said sought to link the tragic incident to policies of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
He dismissed such claims as baseless and cautioned against using human tragedies for political gain.
“It’s most unfortunate to hear the opposition try to politicise this matter rather than focusing on finding solutions,” Dr Forson said.
“Instead of sympathising with the bereaved families and recognising the government’s proactive measures, they are resorting to politicising the issue. Let us come together as a country, find out what led to these killings, and ensure those responsible are brought to justice,” he appealed.
Dr Forson criticised the NPP for failing to ensure meaningful discussions in Parliament to address the issue, saying the NPP had ample opportunity “to discuss their concerns during the business committee meeting but chose not to raise them.”
“Instead of using the appropriate platform to discuss this tragedy, they are ambushing us with accusations. We must be sensitive and allow the affected families to grieve without turning this into a political spectacle,” he stressed.
Meanwhile, the Obuasi tragedy, which has drawn widespread condemnation, is currently under investigation to determine their root causes and prevent future occurrences.
Dr Forson assured the public that the government remained committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring accountability for the lives lost.
He called on all political actors to show leadership and unity in addressing challenges facing the nation rather than engaging in divisive rhetoric.
