GAWU calls for decent work, human rights in sustainable fisheries

The General Agricultural Workers’ Union of Ghana (GAWU) has called for the strict application of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) fundamental principles and rights at work in fisheries governance and operations.

The principles, it stated, guarantee freedom of association, the elimination of forced labour, the abolition of child labour, and the elimination of discrimination in employment.

“These principles remain central to protecting workers and achieving long-term sustainability in the sector,” a statement issued on Wednesday said. The statement was signed by the General Secretary, Mr Andrews Addoquaye Tagoe, following a conference for fishers across the country aimed at promoting their unionisation.

GAWU acknowledged the fisheries sector as a key contributor to Ghana’s economy, food security, and employment, particularly for coastal and inland communities, and reiterated its strong commitment to advancing sustainable fisheries that uphold decent work, human rights, and social justice.

The statement indicated that despite the importance of the fisheries sector, it continued to face major challenges, including overfishing, illegal and unreported fishing activities, climate change impacts, and unsafe working conditions that threaten both sustainability and the welfare of fishers.

It said sustainable fisheries require a people-centred and holistic approach that balances environmental protection with economic development and social inclusion, stressing that protecting fish stocks without protecting fishers undermines sustainability and weakens livelihoods.

GAWU further urged government, state authorities, industry actors, and development partners to strengthen enforcement mechanisms, improve working conditions, and ensure fairness and dignity throughout the fisheries value chain.

The union also called on fishers in both the formal and informal economy to organise and strengthen their collective voice through unionisation, emphasising that strong worker organisation remains essential for defending rights, improving livelihoods, and promoting accountability.

“The General Agricultural Workers’ Union of Ghana remains committed to building a sustainable and equitable blue economy that secures livelihoods, promotes dignity at work, and guarantees that Ghana’s fisheries continue to support present and future generations,” the statement added.
