GBF Treasurer supports Abugiss b’ball court project

Madam Aurora Commodore-Toppar, the Treasurer of the Ghana Basketball Federation (GBF) and an alumna of Aburi Girls’ Senior High School, has donated a cash for GH¢100,000 to her alma mater. The gesture was to support the construction of a new basketball court for the school.
The amount was payment for the first phase of the project estimated to cost GH¢228,183.60.
The new court, when completed in three months, will also be used for other sports such as volleyball, handball, among others.
Madam Commodore-Toppar, an avid basketball lover and a key member of the school’s team that won the Eastern Regional Schools’ Basketball Championships in 2000, stated that the move was to prevent the constant injuries players suffer while playing on the school car park.
According to her, the dream to elevate the school’s basketball court came 2000, when she successfully graduated with flying colours.
Madam Commodore-Toppar has also launched a fundraising drive together with the Aburi Girls’ Old Girls Association (AOGA) 2000-year group to cover the remaining costs of the project.
She appealed to corporate Ghana, individuals, and groups to come on board to complete the project, which will be undertaken by PAK Sports Consult.
Receiving the donation, the Headmistress of the school, Madam Wilhelmina Obuobisa-Atakora, welcomed the initiative and thanked her for honouring her promise to the school at the last inter-houses basketball competition, which she also jointly sponsored.
“Playing the game on a poor car park surface is something that we, as authorities, are not happy about. The players have cried for help for a long time; we are grateful that you have come to our aid.”
The President of AOGA 2000, Madam Akua Boahemah Owusu Sekyere, revealed that the project will be commissioned in October, followed by the refurbishment of the school’s tower in November, ahead of the school’s 79th Speech and Prize Giving Day celebration, which the year group is hosting.
The second phase of the project will cover the seating area.
