Germany reaffirms commitment to deepen academic collaboration with Ghana

THE German Ambassador to Ghana, Frederik Loftshoft, has reaffirmed his country’s commitment to deepen collaboration with Ghana in the area of higher education and innovation.

That, he said formed part of efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and promote sustainable development.

Mr Loftshoft disclosed this at a media engagement in Accra, where he underscored the importance of academic exchange as a key pillar of Ghana-Germany relations.

He noted that both countries currently maintain 69 active university partnerships, describing the cooperation as one of the most dynamic academic networks in Africa-Europe relations.

He emphasised that academic exchange remained central to the partnership, adding that nearly 3,000 Ghanaian students were currently studying in Germany, serving as cultural ambassadors and strengthening ties between the two countries.

The Secretary-General of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Dr Kai Sicks, said Ghana remained a priority country for the organisation, noting that the number of Ghanaian students studying in Germany had doubled over the past five years.

He added that about 50 per cent of Ghanaian students returned home after their studies, contributing to national development and sustaining bilateral links.

The Head of Delegation, Professor Juliane Winkelmann of the Technical University of Munich, said the partnerships were built on trust and long-term institutional commitment.

She highlighted that ongoing collaborations were addressing key global issues while creating opportunities for young people through academic exchange and research.

Prof. Winkelmann expressed optimism that the visit would strengthen existing partnerships and open new avenues for cooperation, particularly in areas such as climate change, health and digital innovation.

The delegation is expected to visit institutions including the University of Ghana, Ashesi University and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to deepen collaboration and explore further opportunities.
