GEXIM identifies high-impact sectors to drive industrialisation, boost export trade

THE Ghana Export-Import Bank (GEXIM) says it has identified poultry, rice, and garment and apparel as its priority sectors to drive industrial transformation and boost export trade.
According to the bank, it was focusing on areas where it could make a significant impact and move away from spreading resources across multiple sectors.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Bank, Mr Sylvester Mensah, made the announcement in Accra on Saturday during GEXIM’s 10th-anniversary health walk.
The walk, aimed at promoting staff wellness, team building, and public awareness, began at the bank’s headquarters through principal streets of Accra, and ended at El-Wak Sports Stadium.
The event was on the theme: “A Decade of Enabling Export Trade and Industrial Transformation: Resetting GEXIM for the Next Frontier.”
Addressing the media, Mr Mensah said Ghana spent more than one billion dollars annually on rice and frozen chicken imports, a trend that could be reversed with strategic investment in local production.
He said the bank would mobilise resources to boost rice production, noting that Ghana currently produces nearly 40 percent of its consumption, with potential for significant growth.
On poultry, he said the Akoko Nitinkitin project sought to increase production, enhance food security, reduce prices, and position Ghana as a future exporter.
The garment and apparel sector, Mr Mensah said, was also prioritised for its strong export potential and capacity to create jobs.
“The garment and apparel sector presents opportunities for foreign exchange earnings and large-scale employment due to high international demand and short production cycles,” he stated.
Mr Mensah said as part of the 10th anniversary celebration, GEXIM would organise an international conference in Accra and a fair to attract more investment and showcase the performance of the bank and learn from best practices in other jurisdictions.
