Ghana to benefit from KGL Foundation Inter-Regional U-17 Colts Championships

THE First Vice Chairman of the National Juvenile Committee (NJC), Mr Joe Salam Abubakar, says that Ghana will soon begin to reap the benefits of the KGL Foundation Inter-Regional U-17 Colts Championships at international levels.

Since 2017, Ghana’s U-17 side has failed to qualify for the continental and FIFA World Cup.

This, according to Mr Abubakar, will soon be a thing of the past as the current football administration prepares a holistic approach right from the base.

Speaking to the media in Prampram yesterday at the 2025 edition of the KGL sponsored tournament, Mr Abubakar said the lack of quality, consistent investment and developmental programmes at the grassroots level has been the bane of Ghana’s woes at the U-17 level.

And to address this, the Football Association, in partnership with the KGL Foundation, has instituted many developmental initiatives, including the championship, to help put Ghana back in competition at the junior levels right through to the senior level.

“Today, there is an advancement of football right from the base to the top. If you do not get the base right, you will struggle. That is why this administration is focused on developing the grassroots for a bright future.”

“In the last four editions of the tournament, a lot of talents have been discovered and are featuring for the various youth sides. David Oduro of Barcelona B is a product from this tournament, as well as six players in the current U-17 squad at the WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship in Cote D’Ivoire.”

“The current administration has juvenile football at heart, and the benefits of the KGL sponsored championship will start bearing fruits soon,” he indicated.

He again noted that in the past few days, there have been a great display of talents from across the country at the championship, who will be harnessed for the benefit of the country.

This year’s edition features an expanded 12-team lineup drawn from all 10 Regional Football Associations alongside the GFA Elite Academies.
