Ghana to host CAC Road, Paracycling championship Feb 8-17

Ghana will host the 19th Confederation of African Cycling (CAC) Road and Paracycling Championship from February 8-17 in Accra.
The event under the auspices of the Union Cycliste International (UCI), the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ghana Cycling Federation (GCF), the National Sports Authority (NSA) as well as the Ghana Olympic Committee would be held on the Olebu-Ablekuma and Pokuase route.
The continental qualification event is opened to over 30 African countries in both the regular and para-cycling events with South Africa, Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Zambia, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Togo, Benin and Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Senegal as those to have confirmed participation.
Speaking to the Times Sports, the General Secretary of the GCF, Shaaban Mohammed, said preparations were far advanced for Ghana to host an exciting championship.
The GCF, he said has completed a ‘justify-your-inclusion’ exercise ahead of the competition and Ghanaian cyclists were geared up to make the nation proud.
He announced that, a Local Organising Committee (LOC) with Majeed Bawa as the Chairperson has been formed to lead a team of committed individuals to ensure a successful event.
He said international coordinators and officials would be expected in the country to partake in a meeting with the Ministry of Youth and Sports to finalise preparations.
“This is a big platform for Ghana to prepare for the Mini Cycling Olympics set for Glasgow in August,” he stated.
“It would also serve as preparations and qualifications for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and ensure Ghana makes a huge mark,” he stressed.
He said, aside the regular cycling, 22 para athletes would have classifications alongside a Level II Coaching and Mechanic courses which are part of the event.
