Ghana’s first Olympic medallist passes on
Ghana’s first-ever Olympic medallist, Clement Isaac Quartey, passed away at the age of 86 last Saturday, November 2nd, in the United Kingdom.
The death of former boxer, who is the older brother of former WBA welterweight champion, Ike ‘Bazooka’ Quartey, was confirmed by sources at the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA).
The Olympian gained prominence when he represented the country at the Summer Olympics in Rome in 1960 in the Light Welterweight division.
He won a silver medal at that Games, making him the first Ghanaian as well as the first Black African to achieve that feat.
He followed that up with a gold medal at the 1962 Commonwealth Games held in Perth, Australia
