National Sports Authority (NSA) boss Prof Peter Twumasi, has disclosed that all 14 athletes, coaches and officials Ghana sent to the Tokyo Olympic Games have received their per diem at the ongoing global sports festival.
According to him, each athlete received $100 as daily allowance for participating at the Olympic Games, while officials and coaches received $120 each per day.
“The only financial commitment left now is the entitlements for winning medals at the games.”
The athletes and all the officials including coaches have spent 42 days beginning from the pre-tournament camping at Inawashiro City of Japan through to the competition period and each athlete is expected to have an accumulated allowance of $4,200 while, the officials and coaches got $5,040 each.
According to Professor Twumasi, government is committed to making sure all athletes are well covered at Tokyo.
“All the athletes and officials have received their per diem just like we did in Morocco,” Prof Twumasi said this in an interview with Accra-based Angel FM.
The NSA boss also disclosed the financial reward package for athletes who win medals for the country.
“For that, everybody knows that winning a gold medal, the prize money is $5,000; if you win a silver medal, you get $4,000, while a bronze medal attracts $3,000.”
Meanwhile, Ghana has so far secured one bronze medal at the Games, courtesy featherweight boxer Samuel Takyi, ending the nation’s 29 years wait without an Olympic medal. – NSA
