Giwa-McNeil win Rugby League 2024 Origins Cup
Tean Giwa-McNeil XIII have been crowned champions of the 2024 Origins Cup after defeating Team Safi XIII in the men, women, and youth championships played at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium.
The Origins Cup is a championship that features a selection of the best players of the Ghana National Rugby League and categorised into two teams -Giwa-McNeil XIII and Safi XIII.
The two teams compete in men, women and youth divisions.
Players selected from this game constitutes the national team, known as the President’s Team.
In the men’s game, Giwa-McNeil totally dominated their opponents, scoring five tries and converting a conversion to end the game 22-8 in their favour.
The women’s game also followed a similar pattern as Giwa-McNeil recorded a 20–8 victory, while the youth side also brushed aside their opponent 20-4 to earn a clean sweep.
The President of the Rugby League Federation Ghana (RLFG), Ms Juliana Storey, congratulated the players selected for
the championship as well as Team Giwa-McNeil for their feat.
She expressed the hope that the selected players will give their best for the national team in various upcoming national assignments.
The General Manager of the RLFG, Jafaru Awudu Mustapha, expressed satisfaction at the performance, saying, “The Origins Cup is a fantastic display of the incredible talents we have in Ghana. It provided a platform for our players to shine and demonstrate their skills on a larger stage.”
