Govt commits to Environmental Protection Act 2025
Government says it is committed to providing leadership, policy support, and resources to translate the Environmental Protection Act, 2025 (Act 1124) into measurable outcomes.
However, it has appealed to the citizenry to support it in this direction, stressing that government alone could not do this.
The Acting Minister of Environment, Science and Technology (MEST), Mr Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, made the call at the maiden Public Lecture of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) held in Accra yesterday.
It was on the theme: ‘Redefining Environmental Governance and Climate Action in Ghana; The Role of EPA Act 1124 (2025).’
The programme brought together policy makers, traditional leaders, development partners, the private sector, youth networks, and academia.
Mr Buah emphasised that Act 1124 represents not just legislative reform but a clear demonstration of government’s resolve to integrate environmental protection into national development.
“Without clean air, safe water, healthy soils, and resilient ecosystems, our ambitions in agriculture, industry, energy, and health cannot be realised,” he stated.
He urged stakeholders to view climate action as an opportunity for renewable energy, green jobs, sustainable agriculture, and circular economy practices.
For her part, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the EPA, Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse, in a speech read on her behalf by Deputy CEO, Prof. Michael Ayamga, said the Act empowers the Authority to enforce stricter compliance, strengthen collaboration, and align governance toward a climate-resilient future.
Panellists also noted that the law grants EPA full oversight of environmental protection and direct control of the national environmental fund.
