How Absa is connecting affluent banking with lifestyle experiences

AS customer expectations evolve, premium banking in Ghana is increasingly extending beyond traditional financial services. While access to credit, investment solutions and everyday banking services remains important, many affluent customers are also seeking convenience, access and experiences that complement their lifestyles.
This shift is reflected in how banks around the world are redefining their premium banking propositions. Payment cards that once served primarily as transaction tools are increasingly being positioned as gateways to travel, entertainment, dining and other lifestyle benefits for affluent customers. Global premium card programmes now place significant emphasis on experiences, concierge support and exclusive access privileges alongside traditional banking services.
The trend mirrors broader changes in consumer behaviour. A 2024 Mastercard study of affluent consumers across 23 markets found that experiences such as travel, entertainment and dining are becoming increasingly important priorities, with 59 per cent of affluent consumers expressing a preference for spending on experiences rather than acquiring additional material possessions.
The study also found that travel ranks among the leading personal aspirations for many affluent consumers.
As customer priorities change, banks are rethinking how they create value and build loyalty. Research suggests that traditional card rewards based solely on points, discounts and cashback are giving way to more personalised approaches that focus on customer engagement and experiences. The report notes that banks are increasingly seeking ways to strengthen customer relationships beyond the transaction itself.
For Absa Bank Ghana, this evolution is reflected in the proposition attached to its Signature and Infinite Cards. Beyond facilitating payments, the cards offer a range of benefits designed to support customers across different aspects of their personal and professional lives.
Benefits available through the Absa Signature and Infinite Card propositions include access to more than 1,200 airport lounges worldwide, concierge services, multi-trip international travel insurance and discounts through selected partner institutions.
Together, these benefits are intended to provide greater convenience and flexibility for customers who travel frequently, conduct business internationally or seek premium travel and lifestyle experiences.
Director of Personal and Private Banking at Absa Bank Ghana, Charles Addo, says the changing expectations of affluent customers are influencing how banks think about customer value.
“Banking today is about much more than facilitating transactions. Affluent customers want solutions that fit seamlessly into their lives and provide value in the moments that matter to them. That includes travel, lifestyle, convenience and access. Our Signature and Infinite Cards are designed with those expectations in mind, and initiatives such as the Champagne in Africa experience are one way of bringing that proposition to life for our customers.”
One example is the Bank’s ongoing engagement with the Champagne in Africa Festival, a premium lifestyle event that celebrates French champagne alongside African fashion, art, food and music.
Through successive editions of the campaign, Absa has linked its premium card proposition to experiential rewards, giving eligible Signature and Infinite Card customers the opportunity to attend the festival based on their card usage.
The approach continues in 2026, with a Ghanaian Signature or Infinite Card customer earning the opportunity to attend this year’s Champagne in Africa Festival in Johannesburg, South Africa, through participation in the campaign.
For banks serving affluent customers, the challenge is remaining relevant in a competitive environment where products and pricing alone may not be enough to maintain customer loyalty.
Travel benefits, lifestyle experiences, access and convenience are becoming important differentiators, helping institutions build stronger customer relationships and create value beyond traditional banking interactions.
As affluent banking continues to evolve, the distinction between financial services and lifestyle experiences is becoming less pronounced.
The institutions that succeed are likely to be those that understand not only their customers’ financial needs but also the aspirations, interests and experiences that shape how they live, work and travel.
