The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the government have called for stronger institutional collaboration, ethical recruitment and skills development to protect Ghanaians seeking opportunities abroad and ensure that migration is safe, orderly and beneficial to national development.
They said coordinated action among government institutions, diplomatic missions, recruitment agencies and international organisations was essential to addressing migration challenges, protecting migrants’ rights and improving access to reliable information and support services.
The call was made at the IOM Ghana Migration Services Open Day in Accra yesterday, where representatives of the Ministries of Labour, Jobs and Employment, Education and Health, together with the Chief of Mission of IOM Ghana, Mrs Fatou Diallo Ndiaye, highlighted the importance of collaboration throughout the migration process.
Mrs Ndiaye said no single institution could address the complexities of migration on its own, stressing the need for partnerships, information-sharing and the identification of new areas of cooperation to ensure that migrants received the necessary support.
She highlighted the IOM’s technical expertise and global networks in facilitating migration, assisting returning migrants and supporting refugees and other vulnerable groups.
She said the organisation assisted migrants returning to their home countries through reintegration programmes and other interventions to help them rebuild their lives.
Its operational services in West and Central Africa also included documentation, flight arrangements and medical assistance for migrants and refugees.
Mrs Ndiaye further emphasised the importance of pre-departure cultural orientation to prepare migrants for life in their destination countries. The sessions provide information on housing, healthcare, education and cultural adjustment.
The IOM also supported member states with document verification to promote secure and lawful migration, she added. Read More
