THE Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has interdicted two medical doctors and two nurses following allegations that they failed to provide timely emergency care to a hit-and-run victim, resulting in the patient’s death.
The disciplinary action was announced by the management of the hospital on Tuesday, after concerns were raised about the handling of the case, which drew public attention and heightened debate on emergency healthcare standards in the country.
According to hospital records, the victim, whose identity has been withheld pending family noti cation, was involved in a hit-and-run accident on the Tema Motorway last month.
The injured person was reportedly brought to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, the premier referral facility in Ghana for emergency treatment.
However, relatives of the victim alleged that staff at the facility failed to attend promptly to the emergency, leading to further complications and eventual death.
In response to the allegations and growing public concern, the hospital management constituted a three-member investigative committee to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and the care provided.
In a statement, the hospital said the interdicted staff were alleged to have “failed to provide emergency medical care to the victim,” a charge that is now the subject of a formal probe.
“In line with established administrative procedures, a committee has been constituted to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and the unfortunate death of the victim,” the statement stated.
The committee, which comprises senior clinical and administrative personnel, is expected to interview witnesses, review clinical records and determine whether there was a breach of professional duty.
The management has urged all persons connected to the matter to cooperate fully with the committee in order to ensure a fair and transparent inquiry that will uphold justice and institutional integrity.
Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, which serves as a major referral centre for critical emergency cases across the country, reaf rmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and the delivery of quality healthcare services.
The interdiction of the health workers is a temporary administrative measure pending the outcome of the investigation.
The hospital noted that further information will be communicated upon completion of the committee’s work.
The incident has reignited discussions within the health sector and among patient-rights advocates on the need to strengthen emergency response systems, reduce waiting times and ensure accountability in healthcare delivery.
