Kekeli Muslim Community expresses concern over NLA, D-G appointment

The Kekeli Muslim Community in Ghana has expressed deep concerns over the appointment of Mr Mohammed Abdul- Salaam as the Managing Director of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), citing Islamic teachings that prohibit gambling.

In a statement issued and copied to The Ghanaian Times yesterday, signed by the President, Sheikh Ahmed Zormelo, the group commended President John Dramani Mahama for his efforts in promoting religious tolerance, including the declaration of an extra holiday for Eid-ul-Fitr, addressing Hijab-related challenges, and promising a reduction in Hajj fares.

These initiatives, the statement noted, have strengthened the bond between the Muslim community in the country and the government.

However, they found the appointment of Alhaji Mohammed Abdul-Salaam to head the NLA as inappropriate.

They argue that the role directly conflicts with Islamic principles, which categorically forbid gambling, betting, and games of chance.

The statement referenced the Quran, which states, “O you who believe! Intoxicants and games of chance and idols and divining arrows are only an infamy of Satan’s handiwork. Leave it aside that you may succeed” (Quran 5:90).

It said, “The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also made it clear that engaging in games of chance is disobedience to Allah and His Messenger. This appointment, therefore, undermines the faith of Muslims and could encourage the youth to participate in these haram acts.”

The group further described the appointment as a potential affront to Islamic values, urging the President to revise his decision to avoid alienating the Muslim community and to prevent further harm.

They emphasised the need for Islamic leaders and clerics to intervene urgently, warning that inaction could erode the goodwill fostered by the administration.

The statement concluded with a plea to President Mahama, saying, “We believe your prompt action on this matter will further demonstrate your administration’s commitment to religious harmony and deepen trust with the Muslim community.”

The community hopes their concerns will be met with understanding and swift action
