KGL Foundation Inter-Regional U-17 Colts Championships: Ashanti set-up Western final at Teshie McDan Sports Complex

Team Ashanti Region came back from a goal down to defeat Greater Accra Region 6–5 on penalties, setting up a final clash with defending champions Western Region in the ongoing 2025 KGL U-17 Inter-Regional Championship on Saturday at the McDan Teshie Sports Complex in Accra.

In a game played at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence, Ashanti fell behind in the 24th minute when Philip Amponsah headed home after Amos Paintsil’s shot deflected into his path.

They had to wait until the 67th minute to equalise, with towering striker Alidu Issah capitalising on a miscommunication between goalkeeper Joel Adotey and his defenders to head home.

Both sides chased a winning goal but were unsuccessful, leading to penalty shootouts.

In the shootout, Greater Accra’s Godfred Adinkra and Haizel Essilifie missed their kicks, while Patrick Wiredu Agyei missed for Ashanti, Yussif Seidu then scored the decisive kick to send Ashanti through.

Ashanti will now face defending champions Western Region in the final, after a well-taken 55th-minute strike from Ramzy Duah secured their win against Central Region.

The final promises to be a thrilling contest between two former champions in what is now Ghana’s premier youth football tournament.

Before the finals, Greater Accra will take on Central Region in the third-place playoff game at 1pm with both aiming for a podium finish.

With a landmark $1 million sponsorship for a five-year period from the KGL Foundation, the championship according to organisers, continues to play a pivotal role in the Ghana Football Association’s grassroots development agenda, promoting talent identification, safeguarding player welfare, and inspiring the nation’s next generation of football stars.

Now in its fifth edition, the KGL U-17 Inter-Regional Championship has firmly established itself as Ghana’s premier platform for discovering and nurturing emerging football talent.

This year’s edition was expanded to 12 teams, bringing together all ten Regional Football Associations along with the two GFA Elite Academies from Accra and Bolga, ensuring both competitive depth and nationwide representation.
