KOICA presents GH₵ 39,000 items to Ashaiman Municipal Hospital

Korea on Monday, presented COVID-19 prevention and hospital items valued at about Gh₵39, 000 to the Community 22 Polyclinic in the Ashaiman Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

The items which were donated through the Korea International Cooperation Agency’s (KOICA) Alumni Association of Ghana (KAAG), included hospital screens, KN95 face masks, patient chairs, infrared hand-held thermometers, hand tissue papers, alcohol dispensers, disposable clogs and gowns and a patient bed.

Also, a structure had been constructed on the compound of the facility to serve as a temporary triage and emergency area for COVID-19 patients, while the COVID-19 support items would help mitigate the exposed risks of the health workers to the disease.

Speaking to the Ghanaian Times, President of KAAG, Dominic Adjei-Annang said the donation was part of the Association’s corporate social responsibility and contribution to support the national efforts to combat COVID-19 in Ghana, while ensuring that doctors and nurses work in a safer environment to save lives.

To help combat the COVID-19 menace, Country Director of KOICA, Moo Heon Kong said the government of Korea had so far contributed over $1m to Ghana’s COVID-19 response through relief and prevention items, laboratory consumables, machines and Personal Protective Equipment.

He stated that the KAAG alumni had earlier donated items worth $12,000 to the National COVID-19 Trust Fund in Ghana last year, while early this year, the KOICA supported  the government with $650,000 to procure COVID-19 vaccines to augment the national vaccination program.

He expressed the hope that the gesture would strengthen Korea’s solidarity and also deepen bilateral relations with Ghana.

The Ashaiman Municipal Director of Health Services, Patience Ami, said the fight against the COVID-19 was not limited to only health professionals, but rather a shared responsibility as exemplified by the KOICA.

She expressed gratitude for the gesture and mentioned that the items would help enhance the COVID-19 response in the municipality.

Medical Director of the facility, Dr Takyi Godfred, said the move of this kind by KOICA and future gestures were required to strengthen the health delivery system.
