‘Kwesi Appiah had timing wrong’
Mr
Oloboi Commodore, the General Manager of Division One League side, Accra Great
Olympics, has said the timing for the announcement of a new captain for the
senior national team, the Black Stars is wrong.
He said with few days to the commencement of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, in Egypt, it was wrong on the part of Coach James Kwesi Appiah to communicate the decision to appoint a new substantive captain.
Speaking to the GNA Sports, Mr. Commodore said, the coach could have been more prudent about the exercise.
“The same captaincy issue caused Ghana in the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations and we should have learnt from that past experience. We were all not happy when it happened to Kwasi Appiah in Senegal,” he added.
Mr. Commodore said “Gyan is a great player, experienced and a motivator for the national team and his absence could affect Ghana’s chances of winning the tournament”.
On his ideal leader for the team, Mr. Commodore said, the captain should be given to a player, who had the ability to lead a team and a regular starter.
“The captain’s band should be given to somebody who has shown it elsewhere that he has the capability of leading a group of people, somebody who would bring the team together like what Stephen Appiah did,” he said. –GNA
