Chief of Lamashegu, Ziblim Abdulai, and the Minority leader, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, have condemned Sunday’s shooting at the Lamashegu-Na’s palace in Tamale in the Northern Region.
Six police personnel chased occupants of an unregistered saloon to the Lamashegu-Na’s Palace and shot the driver.
The action of the police infuriated the youth of the area who mobilised to lynch the police there.
However, the Lamashegu-Na and his elders managed to restrain the youth and spared the lives of the policemen.
The youth, who were not pleased with the action of the chief, pelted stones and other objects at the police.
One person was shot dead while seven others got injured.
Lamashegu-Na Ziblim said the action of the police was disrespectful and unprofessional which must be condemned.
“What the policemen did was disrespect to the highest level. I feel disrespected,” he stated.
He, therefore, called on the police command to as a matter of urgency investigate and issue stiffer punishment to the policemen.
“I want to see these uncouth policemen punished severely,” the chief said.
The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, condemned the situation, stressing that enough of the unprofessional conduct of police in the area.
Mr Iddrisu pleaded with the youth to remain calm, assuring them that they would do everything to ensure justice was done.
He stressed that the policemen be punished severely to serve as deterrent to others.
The Minority leader also questioned the model of recruitment of police as he attributed the unprofessional conduct to the kind of training they went through.
Sunday’s incident happens to be the third of a kind in the metropolis where the police and youth have clashed.
Meanwhile, the police have interdicted the six police officers.
