Let’s stay united – Rev Eduason-Eyison
The Bishop of the Northern Accra Diocese of the Methodist Church Ghana, Right Reverend Professor Joseph M.Y Edusa-Eyison, has urged the citizenry to stay united and pursue peace before and after the general elections.
According to him, unity was essential in ensuring a smooth electoral process, hence the need for citizenry to be united.
Speaking at the official opening of the Northern Accra Diocese’s sixth Synod held in Accra yesterday, Rev. Edusa-Eyison, said that political campaigns should be devoid of inter -party violence, to promote peace during the elections.
According to him, Synod sought to engage members of the church and various stakeholders to deliberate on issues that drive forward the developmental agenda of the church and the country.
Rev. Edusa-Eyison further indicated that good governance, democracy, respect for human rights, justice, and rule of law were also key to the country’s development.
“The church prays that as the nation exercises its franchise and does partisan politics, the campaigns will be devoid of inter-party conflicts during and after the elections”, he said
He urged the citizenry to be circumspect with their utterances, adding that “there is no need for verbal violence because it will turn into physical violence that can ignite war.”
The Bishop stressed the need for the citizenry to see themselves as brothers and sisters to promote peaceful co-existence.
“We should avoid hate speech and show love towards our opponents as we exercise our civil rights,” he said.
Rev. Edusa-Eyison underscored the need for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to assent the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex (LGBTQI+) Bill to promote morality in the nation.
“Like poles repel, and unlike poles attract, and this fundamental law of nature can not be changed. We ask our dear President, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to complete his bit on the Bill and sign it into law”, he said.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina Constituency, Mr Francis-Xavier Kojo Sosu, assured of his commitment and determination to facilitate peace, unity, and social cohesion in the constituency during the elections.
“In order to maintain stability and focus in the country, all stakeholders must put their differences aside and work together in order to promote peace in the upcoming general election,” he said.
He said that Ghana was a beacon of peace and its democracy admired must be sustained.
