Lone Stars arrive for Ghana trial match
A contingent of players and officials of the Liberian national team, the Lone Stars, have arrived in Ghana for tomorrow’s international friendly against the Black Stars at the Accra Sports Stadium at 4pm.
The delegation, which is headed by Liberian FA Executive Committee member, John K. Mulbah, left Morocco on Saturday for Ghana after their AFCON qualifier final group match against the Atlas Lions of Morocco in Agadir was cancelled by CAF following an earthquake in Morocco, which resulted in more than 800 people losing their lives and hundreds injured.
The Liberia team will train at the Accra Sports Stadium at 4pm today ahead of the game tomorrow.
Both countries would use the game to prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, which begin in November with Ghana drawn in Group I and Liberia in Group H.
Black Stars coach, Chris Hughton, is hoping to use the game to test some fringe players ahead of the qualifiers, and also for the friendlies against the USA and Mexico next month.
The last time the two countries met at the Accra Sports Stadium on January 28, 2001, the now president of Liberia, George Manneh Weah, who was then a player-coach, orchestrated a 3-1 defeat of the Black Stars to shatter Ghana’s 2002 World Cup dreams.
Meanwhile, Medeama defender, Fatawu Hamidu, has been given a late call-up to replace injured Abdul Baba Rahman ahead of the game tomorrow.
His invitation into the team was made by Coach Chris Hughton following an injury to the PAOK defender, Rahman, during the AFCON qualifier against the Central African Republic (CAR) on Thursday.
Left-back Gideon Mensah is also an injury doubt for the match.
