Man in trouble for allegedly stealing GWCL equipment

Samuel Mensah has been arrested for allegedly stealing a slab covering valve chambers belonging to the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) at the Ankaful in the Central Region.

Mensah, however, did not show up in court on Tuesday when the case was called.

Residents of Ankaful apprehended Mensah and handed him over to the GWCL for allegedly stealing the slab that protected valves connecting water to various areas in the community.

The police have promised to arrest the person who applied for bail and stood as surety for Mensah.

According to the Central and Western Regional Communications Manager for GWCL, Nana Yaw Barima Banie, “Ghana Water Company has been experiencing theft cases involving our installations for some time now. People steal our water metres, and they steal our metal slabs on some of our valve chambers”.

He disclosed that the valve chambers were installations “that enabled us to control water within the pipe network”.

Nana Banie stated that Mensah was arrested and granted bail but failed to appear in court on Tuesday. He said, “The component of one valve chamber costs GH₵ 15,000 and over the last one year, we’ve had about fourteen of these metal slabs stolen”.

The Central and Western Regional Communications Manager appealed to the public to help GWCL protect its properties and report persons who stole properties of the GWCL to the police or GWLC for the necessary action. -citiewsroom
