Mexico assures World Cup fans of safety despite recent unrest

Mexico President, Claudia Sheinbaum, has reassured fans that there is “no risk” to attending the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the country, following recent violence linked to the death of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera in Jalisco state.

Speaking during her daily press briefing, Sheinbaum confirmed that “all the guarantees” for fan safety were in place for matches scheduled in Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara. She noted that the situation is normalizing, with security forces actively safeguarding the public after cartel loyalists reportedly set up roadblocks and torched buses and stores in retaliation for Oseguera’s death during a military raid.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino also expressed confidence in Mexico’s preparations, telling reporters he felt “very calm” about the tournament. A FIFA spokesperson added that the organization is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with federal, state, and local authorities to maintain public safety.

Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus reaffirmed that the state will host World Cup matches as planned, with four games scheduled in Guadalajara. He emphasized that FIFA has no intention of relocating any matches, and all three Mexican venues remain confirmed.

Mexico is set to host 13 of the 104 tournament matches, including preliminary warm-up games ahead of the official opening on 11 June 2026. -Reuters
