Military recruitment stampede…victim remains unconscious 3 months after incident

Three months after the military recruitment stampede that claimed lives and left several injured in Kumasi, a 25-year-old victim, Sandra Baa Boateng, remains unconscious at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
Sandra was among five persons critically injured during the November 12, 2025 stampede at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, where thousands gathered for military recruitment. While the other injured victims have since been discharged, Sandra remains in a fragile condition and unresponsive to her surroundings.
Last Sunday, a delegation from the Ghana Armed Forces visited Sandra at KATH and later travelled to Esaase near Tanoso to meet her family.
The delegation was led by Albert Sison Ogaja, General Officer Commanding, Central Command; Jenuni Emmanuel Wumbeidow, Commanding Officer of the Fourth Infantry Battalion; and Ben Gah, Principal Staff Officer at the Ministry of Defence (Ghana).
Speaking after the visit, Brigadier General Gah described Sandra’s condition as serious, noting that her continued inability to speak pointed to the severity of her injuries. He said the team would brief the Acting Minister of Defence to determine further steps.
Sandra’s family said they had spent more than GH¢70,000 on medication alone as doctors work to stabilise her condition.
Her mother, Mercy Boateng, appealed for government support, saying the family was overwhelmed emotionally and financially. Her father, Baa Boateng, welcomed the ministry’s intervention but urged authorities to prioritise his daughter’s medical care over other forms of compensation.
Brigadier General Gah indicated that the Ministry of Defence was considering immediate support options, including the possible recruitment of a qualified family member, while continuing to monitor Sandra’s condition.
Sandra’s case remains a painful reminder of the human toll of the Kumasi recruitment stampede.
