Minister welcomes restored peace in Sunyani Traditional Area

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has welcomed the restoration of peace in the Sunyani Traditional Area, describing it as a significant step toward renewed development and investment.

According to him, the return of calm will create a conducive environment for business activities and enable the government to implement its development agenda in the municipality effectively.

Mr. Ibrahim made the remarks when members of the Sunyani Traditional Council paid a courtesy call on the ministry in Accra last Thursday to express appreciation for its role in resolving a long-standing chieftaincy dispute in the area.

The minister explained that the conflict, which involved factions aligned with the Paramount Chief and the Paramount Queenmother, had affected unity and development in the traditional area.

He said the ministry facilitated the resolution process using Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms, combining traditional and administrative approaches to bring the parties together.

Mr. Ibrahim indicated that both sides had begun implementing a mutually agreed roadmap aimed at sustaining the peace process and promoting unity.

“Traditional authorities are critical partners in governance. Without their cooperation and support, it becomes difficult to achieve meaningful development at the local level,” he mentioned.

He commended the leadership of the traditional area for prioritising peace and urged them to remain committed to the roadmap to ensure lasting harmony.

Speaking on behalf of the traditional authorities, the President of the Sunyani Traditional Council and Paramount Chief of Sunyani, Odeefuo Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II, expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama and the ministry for their intervention in resolving the impasse.

He said the mediation had brought renewed hope to the people and positioned the traditional area to pursue development.

The Paramount Queenmother also thanked the ministry, noting that the restoration of peace had brought relief to residents, including non-indigenes living and working in the municipality.
