Mountcrest University College council inaugurated

A 14-member council of the Mountcrest University College was last Friday inaugurated at Larteh-Akuapim in the Eastern Region.

The council which is the fourth, is being chaired by Professor Steve Amisah of the Department of Fisheries and Watershed Department, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

They were sworn in by Justice Samuel Kwame Asiedu, a Justice of the Supreme Court.

Other members of the council are Prof. Mrs Chrissie Stacie Abaidoo, Prof. William Gariba Akanwawiak, Prof. Charles Owu-Ewie, Bishop Felix Odei Annancy, Prof. Helen Yitah and Irene Ansa-Asare Horsham.

The rest are Mrs Monica Ankrah, Mr Ekow Afedzie, Mr Stephen Fiifi Boafo, Mr Nelson Noble Amedewonu, Mr Seyram Kofi Seyram, Dr Betty Awuku and Ms Ama Aboagyewa Akor.

The founder of the University, Mr Kwaku Ansa-Asare said the university had plans to introduce law and Ghanaian languages to programmes offered by the institution.

He explained that the university wanted to use Ghanaian languages to teach law so as to widen access to justice delivery in the country.

According to Mr Ansa-Asare, justice delivery was at the cross roads explaining that the translation at the courts were “violent” thereby “twisting and pounding the facts” and making innocent people to be sentenced to imprison or death.

“The time has come for Ghana to take control and commanding heights of the justice delivery system,” he said adding that by October next year, the university would align the teaching of law with Ghanaian language.

He mentioned that it would start with a pilot programme titled “Law Akan” which would include Fante, Nzema, Akuapem Twi, Asante Twi, Akyem and Bono.

He tasked the newly constituted council to endeavor and to help the school bring back some programmes which includes Master of Law, Nursing and Midwifery, Business Administration and school Medical Sciences.

Mr Ansa-Asare also mentioned that programmes such as publication and Social Sciences also needed reactivation, and urged the council to ensure that these were revived.

Chairman of the council, Prof. Amisah, on behalf of the members pledged their commitment to resolve the challenges confronting the university, and thanked the founder for the confidence reposed in them.
