MTN Ghana develops package to enhance women-led MSEs

WOMEN running small businesses in Ghana will soon have access to a new digital support package combining connectivity, health consultation and insurance services through the latest product developed by MTN Ghana.

Dubbed Adwumapa, the new bundle product is designed to strengthen the operations of women-led Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) that rely heavily on mobile technology to communicate with customers and promote products online.

As part of the programme, winners of the MTN Women in Business Pitch Competition were presented with their prizes.

Speaking at an International Women’s Day event in Accra on Friday, the Product Lead for the Adwumapa Initiative at MTN Ghana, Ms Josephine Nana Ama Asante, said the company developed the product after observing the growing dependence of women entrepreneurs on mobile phones for daily business operations.

The bundle integrates voice call minutes for transactions, call minutes for contacting suppliers and customers, and SMS allowances to support communication with clients.

Ms Asante said one of the key features of the product was a doctor-on-call service that allowed subscribers to consult a medical professional by telephone for a specified period, depending on the value of the bundle purchased.

She added that customers would qualify for the insurance benefits after purchasing the bundle consistently for at least three months.

Ms Mensah-Poku said the Adwumapa platform was created “by women for women,” although it was opened to all customers, including students, professionals and individuals operating side businesses.

She emphasised that empowering women with digital resources could contribute to broader economic growth.

“We saw the women who wake up every morning to open their shops, respond to clients on WhatsApp and promote their businesses on social media. MTN listened and introduced Adwumapa to bridge the gap between communication and digital tools,” she said.

According to Ms Asante, the bundle integrates voice call minutes, internet data and Short Message Service (SMS) allocations with additional services tailored to the needs of small businesses.

She said subscribers could choose either weekly or monthly packages that provided internet access for online marketing and transactions.

“Your health matters because you need to stay healthy to keep your business running. With Adwumapa, you can sit in your shop or at home and call a doctor to explain your health concerns,” Ms Asante said.

The bundle, she said, included an insurance component underwritten by Sanlam Allianz and covered hospitalisation, total permanent disability, fire outbreaks and other unforeseen risks that could disrupt a business.

The Chief Enterprise Officer of MTN Ghana, Ms Angela Mensah-Poku, said the launch forms part of the company’s broader SME Accelerate programme, an initiative aimed at strengthening small and medium-sized enterprises through digital tools, business training and access to financing opportunities.

“When women advance, their families advance, communities develop and the national economy becomes stronger,” Ms Mensah said.

Ms Mensah-Poku said customers could access the Adwumapa bundle by dialling *5060# on their mobile phones to purchase packages and receive instructions for registration and insurance enrolment.
