National Chief Imam Congratulates Dr Bawumia on NPP Flagbearer Victory

THE National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has congratulated former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, on his victory in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary.

In a message issued on behalf of the Muslim community and signed by Dr Abubakar Mohammed Marzuq Azindoo, Personal Assistant to the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr Sharubutu said Dr Bawumia’s election as the NPP’s 2028 presidential flagbearer reflected Ghana’s democratic maturity and commitment to religious pluralism.

Dr Bawumia emerged winner of the contest on Saturday, January 31, 2026, after a keenly contested race involving four other aspirants.

The National Chief Imam also commended the NPP for conducting what he described as a peaceful and orderly congress, urging party members to see the process as an opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to internal democracy, constitutional order, and interfaith harmony.

According to him, the outcome of the primary underscored the fact that Ghana is not a theocratic state but a democracy enriched by religious diversity.

He praised the other contestants for conceding defeat in a spirit of unity and reconciliation, noting that while approaches to intra-party contests may differ, the overarching goal remains the strengthening of the party and the country’s democratic process.

The Chief Imam further lauded the Ghana Police Service and the Electoral Commission for demonstrating transparency, accountability, and objectivity in the conduct of the primary.

He reminded Ghanaians of the collective responsibility required to consolidate the nation’s democracy, stressing that national progress depends on shared civic duty and cooperation.
