NFF petitions FIFA over DR Congo’s use of ineligible players

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has formally petitioned FIFA over the alleged fielding of ineligible players by the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) during their decisive CAF playoff clash for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The controversial match ended in a penalty shootout victory for DR Congo, dashing Nigeria’s initial qualification hopes. However, FIFA has reportedly opened an investigation into the eligibility of several Congolese players, giving the Super Eagles renewed hope.

Speaking on the matter, NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi claimed that FIFA may have been misled by the DR Congo Football Association during the player clearance process.

“FIFA was deceived into clearing those players because it is not FIFA’s responsibility to interpret or enforce domestic citizenship laws,” said Sanusi. “DR Congo law does not permit dual citizenship, yet some of the players involved reportedly hold dual nationality.”

The NFF asserts that FIFA approved the players based on documentation and assurances provided by DR Congo, but the process may have violated both domestic Congolese law and FIFA statutes. The investigation reportedly involves up to nine DR Congo players who allegedly switched national allegiance without completing all legal and administrative requirements.

While possession of a valid passport is a key requirement under FIFA rules, players must also comply with domestic legal provisions and FIFA regulations regarding changes of association. FIFA is said to be examining the case thoroughly.

Potential outcomes could include match forfeiture or disciplinary actions, though a full disqualification from international competitions is considered unlikely. If sanctions are applied, it remains unclear whether Nigeria would automatically advance to the intercontinental playoff in Mexico or face another qualifying fixture.

For now, the Super Eagles remain on standby as the football world awaits FIFA’s verdict, which could significantly alter the African qualification landscape for the 2026 World Cup.
