Nkwanta South Assembly rolls out DACF-funded health, school projects

THE Nkwanta South Municipal Assembly has embarked on a comprehensive infrastructure development programme to address deficits in health and education infrastructure, with the aim of enhancing quality education and improving healthcare delivery in the municipality.

The projects include the construction of a three-unit classroom block at Mmem-Akura, a Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound at Vume, and another three-unit classroom block at Mafikope.

Speaking at the inauguration of a three-unit classroom block, an office and a staff common room at Mmem-Akura in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region last Friday, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Awal Joseph Antwi, said the project was funded through the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) and completed within six months.

Mr Antwi disclosed that sod-cutting ceremonies had also been performed at Mafikope for the construction of another three-unit classroom block, as well as at Vume for the CHPS compound project, all funded by the DACF.

He explained that the projects were strategically selected to address the health and educational needs of residents in 11 overbank communities within the municipality.

The MCE said residents of these communities had for years been crossing the Oti River and travelling long distances to Nkwanta to access healthcare services, a situation which would be resolved upon the completion of the CHPS compound.

According to him, the new education facilities would also help address challenges related to poor school infrastructure and provide an attractive learning environment to encourage school attendance among children in the beneficiary communities.

Mr Antwi stressed that quality school infrastructure was critical to the delivery of quality education and reiterated the government’s commitment to improving the standard of living of the people.

He assured that the Assembly would continue to roll out development programmes and projects aimed at transforming lives in the municipality.

The MCE therefore urged residents to support government initiatives by monitoring ongoing projects to ensure early completion and high-quality work that would guarantee value for money.

The Member of Parliament for the Nkwanta South Constituency, Mr Geoffrey Kini, said he was working closely with the District Assembly to implement programmes and projects that addressed the development needs of the people.

He said government was making efforts to improve the poor road network in the municipality to facilitate the smooth transportation of goods and services, and called on residents to cooperate with him and the Assembly to bring the needed development to the area.

The Nkwanta South Municipal Director of Education, Mr Joseph Korsina, commended the Assembly for its development initiatives, noting that improved school infrastructure was key to achieving quality education in the municipality.

Mr Kini assured that school authorities would take good care of the new school buildings, as well as those under construction, to prolong their lifespan, and encouraged pupils and students to take advantage of educational opportunities to prepare themselves for a better future.
