Palestinian envoy urges global action to support 2-state solution

The Palestinian Ambassador to Ghana, Abdalfatah Ahmed Khalil Alsatarri, has appealed to the international community to uphold justice, protect human rights, and support the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. He emphasized that the call had become more urgent as Palestinians continue to endure decades of occupation, dispossession, and hardship under Israeli control.

The Ambassador made the appeal in Accra during the commemoration of the United Nations International Day of Remembrance of the Palestinian People, an event attended by diplomats, residents, and supporters of the Palestinian cause. Mr Alsatarri traced the conflict to the 1948 occupation of Palestinian lands and the full occupation of territories in 1967. He recalled the first Intifada, during which civilians, many of them children, armed only with stones, faced Israeli tanks, resulting in more than 1,500 deaths and over 3,000 injuries. He highlighted that tens of thousands of Palestinians had been killed or injured over the years, with homes, schools, and public facilities severely damaged, and that civilians bore the heaviest burden.

Reaffirming Palestine’s commitment to peace, the Ambassador insisted that a two-state solution remains the only viable path, with East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state and the return of lands occupied in 1967. He urged Israel to halt illegal settlements and comply with UN Security Council resolutions.

Furthermore, Mr Alsatarri expressed gratitude to Ghana for its steadfast support and acknowledged the solidarity of the UN Secretary-General and the UN system in Ghana. The UN Resident Coordinator, Mr Zia Choudhury, praised the resilience of the Palestinian people but cautioned that resilience “is not a substitute for peace,” highlighting the deep humanitarian crisis in Gaza and commending Ghana for providing recent humanitarian relief.
