Panthers pip Bulls as Rugby League Men’s 13s Championship race tightens
Accra Panthers closed the gap on Bulls in the ongoing Rugby League Federation Ghana (RLFG) Men’s 13s Championship after defeating the latter 16–4 at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium over the weekend.
After losing their last game to Nungua Tigers, Panthers needed to make a statement to keep alive their championship aspiration.
Right from the blast of the whistle, Panthers made their intentions known, with Kofi Adusei Abah scoring two tries in the 17th and 22nd minutes.
Despite missing both conversion attempts, Panthers held on to an 8–0 lead at the break.
Bulls’ Richard Browne Asare received a yellow card in the 56th minute, leaving Panthers’ Adam Ibrahim Adam to capitalise on the moment of frustration to score another try in the 59th minute to extend the lead to 12–0.
Bulls finally found their mojo and scored a try through Leslie Boadu in the 66th minute, but Panthers extended the lead to 16–4, with Godwin Asamoah crossing the line in the 74th minute.
They held on to seal a famous victory to remain in the hunt for the title.
In the day’s other games, Dragons secured a comprehensive 36–10 victory in a high-scoring encounter, while Nungua Tigers earned a 30–0 scoreline over Skolars after the latter forfeited the game due to player injuries.
The results have further tightened the championship race, with Bulls and Dragons level on 21 points in the standings, Accra Panthers on 18 points and Nungua Tigers on 15 points, while Titans and Skolars remain on three points each.
The final round of the championship continues with three important fixtures on October 4, with Titans facing Panthers, Bulls playing Tigers, and Skolars battling Dragons.
