Seven illegal miners have been confirmed dead Saturday after a mining pit collapsed at Asaman Tamfoe in the Atewa East District of the Eastern Region.
The incident was said to have occurred at about 11:00 p.m. while the miners were reportedly working in the pit in search of gold.
According to sources in the community, two miners who were outside the pit when it collapsed rushed to inform residents, who subsequently mobilised to assist in the rescue operation.
The police and other relevant emergency agencies were also alerted, leading to the deployment of personnel to the scene.
Rescue teams worked throughout the night and succeeded in retrieving the remains of seven.
Five of the deceased have reportedly been identified as residents of Moseaso, while the remaining two were said to be members of the Asaman Tamfoe community.
Personnel from the Anyinam District Police Command, the Ghana National Ambulance Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), alongside community volunteers, were at the site to assist with the rescue operations.
DSP David Fianko-Okyere from the Eastern Regional South of the Police Public Affairs Unit confirmed this to The Ghanaian Times.
