Police arrest pastor at Nkawkaw for holding church service

The Nkawkaw Police have arrested a pastor for defying the President’s directive on suspension of church activities for four weeks.

Pastor John Jeremiah Addo, aged 40, and leader of Kingdom of God Church in Amanfrom, a suburb of Nkawkaw, was apprehended when he was holding a church service with about 50 congregants.

He has been detained and is assisting the police in further investigations.

The Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ebenezer Tetteh confirmed this to the Ghanaian Times, adding that he was arrested on Sunday, March 22, 2020.

He explained that the police on Sunday were informed by a sub-chief of Nkawkaw Amanfrom, Nana Mireku Asumeng and one Kwaku Obeng that the pastor was holding a service with about 50 people contrary to the President’s directives.

The Police PRO said the day patrol team proceeded to the church at Amanfrom and found the pastor leading the service.

DSP Tetteh said he was arrested and brought to the station.

He said upon interrogation, suspect Addo stated that he was performing the church service because he did not understand why authorities would prevent pastors from organising church activities and allow market women to sell at the market.

DSP Tetteh said the suspect has been detained to assist in investigations.
