Police arrest suspect on wanted list for robberies

A 47- year-old man suspect, who has been on the police wanted list for alleged robberies since 2019, has been arrested at Sapeiman, in Accra, by the police.

Joseph Abrefa Ampah, the Founder of Tropical Heritage, a non-governmental organization, is reported to be involved in robberies in Accra, Kumasi and parts of Eastern region.

The Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, Commissioner of Police (COP) Isaac Ken Yeboah, disclosed these at a press conference, in Accra, yesterday.

COP Yeboah said early this year, Ampah robbed a victim of bars of gold, vehicle, unspecified amount of money, and shot the victim many times, but later abandoned the vehicle at Akooko Junction.

The Director General of CID said Ampah formed five robbery gangs and supplied arms and ammunitions to members for their activities.

COP Yeboah said the suspect was also involved in a robbery attack on a bullion van at Spintex, in Accra.

He said Ampah and his gang also attacked and robbed people at gun point and in some instances killed their victims.

COP Yeboah said two weeks ago, Ampah and his gang attacked and robbed the owner of an unregistered Nissan Navara pick-up at gun point under the pretext of buying the vehicle, but the vehicle has been retrieved.

The CID boss said Musa Kamara, 26, who was also arrested at Kibi, in the Eastern region, was a member of a gang recruited for robberies by Ampah.

In another development, COP Yeboah stated that a motorbike repairer, Rashid Seidu, 25, was arrested in possession of two foreign pistols and AK 47 gun live ammunitions.

He said Seidu, a member of a gang of robbers formed by Ampah, attacked a victim at Kyebi and took away his vehicle, murdered a mobile money vendor in Kumasi and snatched another vehicle.
