Rodriguez stops former champion in round eight
Jesse Rodriguez retained the WBC junior bantamweight belt when he stopped former world champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in the eighth round at the Tech Port Arena in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday night.
Rodriguez was in control throughout the fight as he out-boxed Rungvisai from the opening round.
The champion scored a knockdown in the seventh round, before the referee stopped the fight at 1:50 into the eighth round.
Rodriguez improved his record to 16-0; 11 and Rungvisai’s record dropped to 50-6-1; 43.
On the same card, WBA and IBF junior featherweight champion Murodjon Akhmadaliev was most impressive in scoring a 12th-round stoppage win over Ronny Rios.
Akhmadaliev had to overcome an injured hand before sending Rios down in the final round. The time was 2:06.
In a women’s bout, undisputed welterweight champion Jessica McCaskill (12-2; 5) retained her WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO belts on a third-round technical knockout win over Alma Ibarra (10-2; 4).
Featherweight Raymond Ford (12-0-1; 6) outscored Richard Medina (13-1; 7) over 10 rounds in a clash for the WBA Continental Americas and the IBF North American titles.
The scores were 100-90 twice and 99-91.
Middleweight Nikita Ababiy (12-0; 6) won on points over eight rounds against Noe Larrios Jr (14-2; 6). – SuperSport
