School sports must celebrate talent, not violence
The outbreak of violence at zonal inter-school athletics events in the Central Region yesterday is deeply troubling. What was intended to be a celebration of youthful talent and sporting excellence among Senior High Schools and Senior High Technical Schools instead descended into chaos, leaving students injured and the broader community shocked.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) acted decisively, directing the immediate suspension of all zonal inter-school sporting activities in the region.
In a letter dated February 22, 2026, addressed to heads of second-cycle institutions, the Regional Education Directorate cited “grave acts of violence” at recent competitions, which threatened the safety of students, staff, and spectators while undermining the very purpose of school sports.
This temporary suspension is necessary. It allows authorities to investigate the incidents, review the underlying causes, and consult with all relevant stakeholders to prevent further occurrences.
Heads of schools have been instructed to halt all planned competitions, inform staff and students, and comply fully with the directive.
The Ministry of Education Ghana has condemned the violence in the strongest terms. Deputy Education Minister, Clement Abas Apaak, confirmed that students involved in the confrontations, and anyone complicit, will face severe sanctions in accordance with the law and established disciplinary procedures.
The Ghana Police Service is reported to have arrested three suspects in connection with the incident.
Eyewitness reports indicate that the confrontation involved students from Obrachire Senior High Technical School and the Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS).
The altercation escalated quickly, leaving one student from Obrachire injured after being attacked with sticks and stones. Videos circulating on social media show the scene of confusion and highlight the serious nature of the incident.
School sports are meant to teach discipline, teamwork, and fair play. They should inspire pride, not fear.
This incident is a wake-up call for all stakeholders—educators, parents, and policymakers alike—to re-examine the systems that govern student conduct during sporting events.
Safety protocols must be enforced, supervision strengthened, and students educated on the responsibilities that come with competition.
As investigations continue, it is crucial that lessons are learned. Schools should not only celebrate athletic talent but also instill values of respect, self-control, and accountability. The nation owes it to our youth to ensure that school sporting events are environments where learning, camaraderie, and excellence can thrive safely.
The Ghanaian Times is urging the GES and school authorities to take this issue seriously: implement robust safety and disciplinary measures, train staff in conflict management, and educate students on appropriate conduct.
Let this incident be a turning point—one that ensures school sports remain a source of joy, pride, and positive development for our students.
