Son jailed 8 years for threats to harm mother

The Tarkwa Circuit Court has sentenced a 24-year-old ex-convict, Kofi Essien, also known as ‘Buffon’, to eight years’ imprisonment with hard labour for threatening to harm his mother at Wassa Essikuma in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality.
Essien, an illegal miner, who was also charged with causing unlawful damage, pleaded guilty with an explanation for both counts.
Prosecuting, Chief Superintendent Alex Odonkor, narrated to the court presided over by Mrs Hathia Ama Manu that the complainant, Madam Agnes Boadi, a farmer, 47, is the biological mother of Essien.
The complainant and Essien resided in the same house at Wassa Essikuma. The court heard that about two years ago, Essien returned from prison and realised that his mother was with a certain man she was in a relationship with.
According to the prosecution, Essien expressed his unhappiness about the relationship and warned his mother to quit it.
Chief Superintendent Odonkor said the mother refused to discontinue the relationship, and so Essien threatened to kill her.
The prosecution revealed that since Essien continued his usual attacks on his mother, for fear of losing her life, she one day left the house and went to spend the night with the boyfriend, who lived in the same town as her.
The next day, Essien went to the boyfriend’s house and ordered his mother to return home, but she refused. The prosecutor said Essien, who became upset, returned home, picked a machete, and used it to damage the lock in the complainant’s door.
Chief Superintendent Odonkor further noted that Essien was not satisfied with his actions, went for a pickaxe, and used the same to create holes in the walls of the building. The total value of the items damaged was GH¢2,570.00
He said Mrs Manu reported the case at the Wassa Aboso police station, from there, the police went to arrest Essien to assist in investigations. —GNA
